Summer Auto Maintenance Tips

Jun 20, 2018, 13:52 PM by Discount Auto Glass

Summer can be a tough season on our vehicles. High temperatures are not kind to their batteries, cooling system, or tires which can threaten the life of any of these systems. To help avoid car problems, we recommend you follow these tips and take the best care of your vehicle especially during summer months.

Auto Repair

  1. Change your oil and and filter regularly. Intense weather conditions put more demands on your oil and its filter which is working hard to keep the engine lubricated and capture harmful debris. A clean filter means more dirt is getting picked up which equals a smoother engine.

  2. Double check fluid levels. The fluctuating temperatures around the spring and summer months can lead to lower transmission fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, and even windshield wiper fluid. Coolant is especially important to watch for because one of the most common summer breakdowns is overheating.

  3. Test your battery. Most people don’t realize that heat is the number one cause of battery failure or reduced battery life. If your battery is more than three years old, it’s smart to have it tested by a trained technician to ensure that it will last through the summer or determine if it needs a charge. In addition, clean any corrosive fluid buildup from around the clamps or battery terminals. Car battery

  4. Have your brakes inspected. You’ll want to be certain that your brake pads are in top shape before hitting the road on your summer vacation. City driving, work commuting, or stop-and-go traffic could have done a number on your brake pads or rotors. It’s smart to have them checked out before putting more strain on them this summer.

  5. Replace your wipers. Summer may be known for being dry, but it will inevitably rain at some point. Worn wipers create horrible streaks across the windshield and can actually create permanent scratches on your glass if not replaced often enough.

  6. Check the air conditioner. It’s almost unthinkable to travel anywhere during the summer without the A/C on full blast. Replacing your air filter is an important step in making your car’s air flow function properly. If it’s been a while since you’ve done this, dirt and dust are clogging the system and impeding proper flow.
