Tips for Traveling During a Winter Storm

Winter is here and it has hit us hard! We have already experienced below freezing temperatures, ice, and snow.   1. Stock up on the basics.

    A winter survival kit is important in case of emergency. Items we recommend including are: a shovel, windshield scraper, flashlight, battery powered radio, water, snack food, extra clothes and blankets, emergency reflectors, and a cell phone adapter for plugging into a lighter.

  2. Know how to speak to emergency personnel.

    If you get stranded on the side of the road, try to call 911 on your cell phone. Be able to provide your location, condition of yourself and passengers, and the problem you are experiencing. Follow the instructions of the 911 operators, sometimes you may be told blizzard on the side of the roadthat you need to stay where you are until help arrives.

  3. Prepare for survival.

Prepare for your trip ahead of time. Make sure you have at least a half tank of gas and let someone know the route of your trip before you go. If you end up getting stuck, put your emergency reflectors out so any passerby’s can see you. Keep your dome light on because rescue crews can see a small glow at a distance. And, stay in your vehicle for shelter. Getting out in a storm can be very dangerous.
