Protecting Your Vehicle from Severe Weather

It’s almost that time of year...

Springtime signals the warmer weather we’ve all been waiting for, but with that comes something else we’re all too familiar with in the south — the potential for severe storms.
High winds, hail and lightning all pose unique risks to your vehicle, and it’s important to know how you can prevent unnecessary damage.

Store Your Vehicle in a Safe Place

Move your car into your garage, if you have one. If you’re away from your home, try to find a nearby parking garage to move your vehicle to before a storm hits your area. Avoid parking under trees at all costs, as wind may cause limbs to fall and damage your hood, roof or windshield. Make sure your windows are completely rolled up to prevent water and debris from damaging the interior of your vehicle. Keep in mind that hail can cause major cracks in your auto glass. If you can’t park in a covered area and hail is heading your way, covering your car with thick blankets is better than nothing. This simple move can reduce weather damage.

If You’re Driving

Sometimes storms seem to brew out of nowhere, and you suddenly find yourself caught in one while driving in traffic on your way home. Make sure your headlights are on and you’re driving slowly. Always remember to be cautious while driving in a storm, especially if you’re having trouble maintaining control of your vehicle due to wind or visibility issues. If this is the case, it’s better to be safe than sorry, and you should pull over until the worst of the weather passes. Pull into a parking lot, covered area (if possible), or far off the side of the highway.

Heavy Rain

If at all possible, keep your vehicle away from low-lying areas that are prone to flooding. If you see a large area of standing water, choose a different route to your destination. It doesn’t take much water to damage your engine. Don’t slam your brakes on a wet road surface, as this can lead to hydroplaning. Make sure you’re staying far enough behind other vehicles to have more than enough time to brake, if necessary.
