If you’ll be driving in wintry conditions soon, make sure that you know what to expect. Safety is the most important thing to keep in mind, and we wish you and your family all the best as you travel throughout the winter season! Nobody loves driving on icy roads, but unfortunately, you may find yourself having to do just that at some point this year. Below freezing temperatures can lead to hazardous road conditions from time to time, so it’s important to know the basics when it comes to driving in the winter. We’ve put together a short list of cold weather driving tips just for you!

Be Prepared

Make sure that your vehicle is prepared for the worst, whether you’re driving a short distance or taking a long road trip. Keep at least a half a tank of gas in your vehicle at all times, especially if you’ll be traveling a long distance. Make sure your tires aren’t low on air and the tread isn’t worn out — these problems can be especially dangerous on ice. Keep emergency items such as medications, flashlights, water and thick coats or blankets in the trunk just in case.

Driving Tips

  1. Make sure that you drive slower than you usually would due to lower traction.

  2. Don’t follow other cars too closely. Allow plenty of room to stop safely without accidentally rear-ending the car in front of you due to road conditions.

  3. Don’t slam the gas or brakes — accelerate and decelerate slowly. If you quickly push your foot down on your gas pedal or brake pedal abruptly, you could easily lose control of your vehicle and cause an accident.

  4. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Make sure to pay attention to the road and look as far ahead as possible at all times. Do not text and drive! Accidents can happen within seconds, and your eyes need to stay on the road.

  5. Don’t use cruise control on snowy or icy roads.

Do not drive until your windshield and all windows are properly defrosted and you can see clearly.
