Nobody wants to deal with a cracked windshield, no matter the weather. The good news? There are things you can do to prevent cracks from forming! As we enter the coldest months of the year, temperatures will dip well below freezing — especially at night. Here are some things you can do to keep your windshield clear of cracks in 2020!
You should avoid sudden temperature changes and properly defrost your vehicle so the glass warms up slowly. Do not pour boiling or hot water over your windshield to quickly clear the ice off, as this can definitely damage your windshield! You can also use an ice scraper to help speed up the clearing process, but don’t use household objects such as a metal spatula or your keys.
Get Chips Repaired
You don’t want that chip in your windshield to transform into a crack over time. Unfortunately, extremely cold (and hot) temperatures can cause this! If you notice a small chip, it’s best to get it repaired as soon as possible. Otherwise, you could end up spending a lot more money getting your entire windshield replaced.
Keep a Safe Distance
Whether you’re traveling on the highway or a gravel road, remember to leave plenty of distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you, especially if it’s a dump truck or other large vehicle. It’s no secret that tires kick up rocks and debris, which can hit your windshield and cause chips or cracks. Play it safe and don’t follow other vehicles too closely. You should also avoid gravel roads and busy roads if you can help it.
