Tips for Traveling Safely With Your Pet

Traveling with your furry friend can be a lot of fun, but safety should always be your top priority when it comes to having your pet in a vehicle. Whether you plan to take a long road trip in the coming months, or just plan to bring Fido along for some errands, make sure you both stay comfortable and safe for the ride. We’ve put together a simple checklist just for you!

  1. Prepare your pet for an extended trip. You can do this by taking him or her on several short trips beforehand. You should also make sure your pet is wearing a collar at all times.

  2. Don’t let your pet ride in your lap. Not only can this obstruct your vision, but if you’re in an accident, the airbag can injure your pet — or worse. The safest way for your loved one to travel is in a crate, carrier or secured with a dog seat belt/harness.

  3. Never transport your pets in the back of a pickup truck.

  4. Take plenty of rest stops to avoid accidents. This is especially important if you’re taking your pet on a long road trip. Allow your furry friend to get out of the vehicle and walk around for a few minutes, enjoy some food and take a “bathroom” break.

  5. Bring a travel kit for your pet. This can include items such as a waste scoop, bowl, medication, snacks, a leash and toys.

  6. Don’t leave your animal unattended in a parked vehicle. Even with the window cracked, temperatures inside your car on a hot day can skyrocket. This puts your animal in extreme danger.

We know that your pet is a member of the family, and you want to take him or her with you wherever you go! Traveling is exciting, just be sure to put safety first both inside and outside of the vehicle.
