Summer Driving Tips

Jun 16, 2020, 16:00 PM by Rebecca Nickols

The pavement is heating up, and the fiery, fun days of summer are finally here! Is your vehicle ready to take on the heat though? You don’t get a vacation when it comes to car care! We’ve put together a quick checklist of things you should consider when it comes to staying safe and keeping your car in tip-top shape during the hottest months of the year.

General Maintenance Reminders

As temperatures rise, keep an eye out for any warning signals from your vehicle. Get your fluids checked, your oil changed on schedule, and be especially mindful of your tires. Pay attention to what your vehicle manufacturer recommends when it comes to tire pressure. You never want your tires to be over inflated or under inflated, as both can lead to unique problems. You should also inspect the radiator, windshield wipers, engine belts, hoses and battery.

Safe Driving

There are unique challenges that come with driving in the summertime, but you can be prepared with a few quick pointers:

  • Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Sun glare can greatly reduce visibility as well as reaction time. You should wear quality sunglasses and use your sun visor when needed.

  • Always review your vehicle’s weight limit before tying or otherwise securing anything on top of it.

  • Don’t transport items that obstruct your view or mirrors. For example, stacking coolers and bags can prevent you from being able to see behind you.

  • Keep your windows clean to avoid visibility problems caused by glare. If your auto glass is streaked or dirty, bright sunlight can make it difficult to see the road and any objects on or around it.
