In a School Zone
While driving in a school zone area, it’s incredibly important to pay close attention to your surroundings. You should:
Slow down. Never speed in a school zone.
Do not use your cell phone without pulling over first.
Never block a crosswalk.
Watch for children all around you. Kids may walk, run up out of nowhere or zip past your vehicle on a bicycle. The best way to prevent an accident is moving slowly.
Do not pass vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians.
Do not pass a stopped school bus that is loading or unloading children. It’s also important to not follow buses too closely, and to slow down when you see their lights start to flash.
General Safety Tips
Driving can be tricky, especially for teenagers who aren’t used to the rules of the road. Some pointers to keep in mind include:
Always leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Many rear-ending accidents could have easily been avoided by not following too closely.
This should be well-known, but always buckle up! It could save your life.
Pay attention to the weather and have a plan in case of severe storms, flooding, ice on the roads, etc.
Limit distractions. Stay off of your cell phone, limit the number of passengers you allow to ride along, don’t eat while driving, and shuffle a playlist instead of searching for music on the road.
Obey speed limits and use turn signals, even when you don’t see someone behind you.
