Can Hot Weather Cause Cracks in Your Windshield to Get Worse?

You may have heard that hot weather can cause chips and cracks in your auto glass to get worse...but is it true or just a myth? You may be surprised to learn that yes, it is possible! As summertime heat and humidity set in, it’s more important than ever to get your auto glass repaired or replaced before minor issues have a chance to become worse and get even more dangerous.

Your windshield is made up of two pieces of glass. When even a small crack spreads across your windshield, it allows moisture to get trapped in between those two pieces of glass. It’s no secret that Arkansas has humid summers, but moisture can also get trapped due to showers, storms, or even going through a car wash. This weakens your windshield overall, and when temperatures fluctuate, that moisture expands and the cracks in your windshield do with it.

The sun itself can also damage your windshield, as high summertime temperatures in the south are no joke. This is because extreme heat causes your glass to expand. When possible, park in a shaded area or in a parking garage. If the temperature outside of your car is much different than the temperature inside your car, pressure can build, also causing chips and cracks to get worse. It’s additionally worth noting that driving on bumpy roads, slamming your brakes, and rushing over speed bumps can add stress to your windshield. So if you’re riding on back roads to get to a floating entry point, hiking trail, or simply enjoying the scenery, be careful if you already have a cracked windshield!

No matter how small the chip or crack, it’s always best to get your glass repaired or replaced as soon as possible. Are you in need of auto glass or residential glass?
