The long weekend is here, and with it comes the possibility of all types of driving conditions! If you find yourself road tripping this weekend, there are several things you can do to help ensure the safety of you and your passengers. We’ve put together a short list of tips for prepping - yourself and your vehicle - for a road trip::
Plan ahead! Make sure your vehicle has been checked for routine maintenance if you’re going to be driving a longer distance. Make sure everything is roadworthy, including the standard oil change, tires and, of course, windshields.
Slow Down - Reducing your speed is necessary in different driving conditions and on various road types. Research ahead and know the roads before you go. A chipped windshield shouldn’t have to be included in your travel budget!
Don’t Slam Your Brakes - Doing so may cause your wheels to spin or lock up on wet roads.
Stay Back - Don’t follow the vehicle in front of you too closely. You don’t want a cracked or broken windshield! If it’s raining, you should put even more space than you normally would between your vehicle and other vehicles on the road. Try for a distance of three car lengths between you and the person in front of you.
Keep Your Headlights On - This will help other drivers see you, even during the day.
Check the Weather - Know what to expect before you hit the road, and make sure your wipers are in good condition before you set out.
Wear a Seatbelt - You should always wear your seatbelt, but definitely don’t skip out on doing so if the roads are wet.
