How Winter Affects Your Windshield

winter windshieldThe cold, wintry air can really take its toll on a vehicle’s windshield if you’re not careful. Debris, cracks, ice - all of these things can be factors in cold weather. And they can be an unwanted headache in the new year. Be sure to pay attention to how to take care of your vehicle in the winter so that you don’t have to fix unnecessary damage later. Maintenance and prevention are key!

We’re all guilty of letting cracks go unattended, but did you know that ice can enter windshield cracks very quickly and expand what was a minor crack, making it much larger? This is why when you see something small, you shouldn’t wait, but get it fixed immediately so it doesn't become worse. Many times smaller chips and cracks can be easily patched, saving you more money in the long run.

Temperature changes

No matter how tempting, pouring hot water or hitting the windshield with hot air can damage it severely. In the winter, resist pouring hot water to clear your windshield and  avoid cracking. Instead, carefully use an ice scraper and scrape across horizontally.

The cold months call for a full tank of washer fluids to make sure the glass is clean for better visibility and to spot any possible damage that comes along.

Careful Parking

If you have a garage, use it! Both debris and freezing temperatures during the winter can damage your windshield before you know it. If you don’t have a garage, invest in a cover to help protect the glass. And while out, watch where you park to keep safe from falling limbs.
