It’s officially the holiday season and travel is near! AAA predicts almost 49 million people will travel by road this year and 2022 is expected to be the third-busiest Thanksgiving travel weekend in history with 54.6 million travelers. Before you get going on the road, it’s important to double-check your vehicle so you arrive safely at your destination, especially since travel is expected to increase so much.

Here are a few tips to make sure your vehicle is in optimal condition for those holiday road trips:

  1. Have an emergency vehicle kit. Prepping starts while packing. Make sure you plan ahead before you even leave the house. Make a bag full of items like tire changing tools, first aid supplies and extra snacks as well as the number for roadside assistance.

  2. Leave with plenty of time. Things happen, of course, and schedules don’t always permit us to leave with lots of extra time, but if at all possible, it’s best to allow for traffic, unusual weather and a wrong turn here and there. It’s also nice to be able to stop and take a few breaks, especially when traveling with kids and pets.

  3. Inspect your windshield. Anything that needs fixed should be fixed before you leave! That means all chips and cracks that could spread and get worse. Your windshield should protect you in an accident and from debris, and if it already has defects it’s going to be safe. Call Discount Auto Glass and we can give you a free quote and have it fixed in no time. We can also come right to you!

  4. Check your tires. This isn’t something that should be skipped because it’s a hassle. That’s because it’s a road trip safety necessity. When inspecting, check the tire pressure and make sure they’re free of nails and rotated properly.

  5. Be alert. Driving distracted is a common safety fail more than ever. Refrain from technology and pull over if you need to look something up or rely on other passengers for help. Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You could put yourself and others at risk.
